Building the Future of Advancement

Interns share how the CASE Advancement Internship helped them build connections, discover purpose, and consider a future in higher education.

Program Overview

The CASE Advancement Internship is a summer internship (June 1 – July 24, 2026), in which the advancement interns work a designated amount of hours per week, within areas of a university's advancement office. Interns receive on-the-job training and gain valuable skills in the professional areas of advancement, including fundraising, alumni relations, advancement services, and communications and marketing.

For those who may not have originally considered a career in advancement, the CASE Advancement Internship is a great way to explore a career in the world of educational advancement and to see the benefits those professions bring to the education sector.

The CASE Advancement Internship allows students to develop a peer network early in their career and provides them with several mentors and professional contacts in the advancement industry at the beginning of their career. Since 2016, more than 830 interns have completed the program.

Internship Experience Highlights

  • Hands-on educational advancement experience at a premier institution
  • Compensation for the duration of the internship
  • Three days of in-person training in Washington, D.C., for US/Canada Interns (June 2026)
  • Mentor from your host institution
  • Matched up with a CASE member in field of interest for Zoom meetings throughout the internship
  • Participation in introductory online seminars to learn about the various areas of the advancement profession
  • CASE membership for one year after the internship, accessing CASE webinars, the CASE Library and Career Central
  • Regular communication post-internship on entry-level job postings and professional development opportunities

Frequently Asked Questions

The CASE Advancement Internship is an eight-week summer internship designed with the goal to increase the number of diverse professionals in educational advancement. The internship is a full-time position at a host institution in which interns receive on-the-job training and gain valuable skills in the four professional areas of advancement – fundraising and development, alumni relations, advancement services, and communications and marketing.

If you are a student interested in a career in advancement, the CASE Advancement Internship will provide you with real advancement experience that you can put on your resume while offering you the opportunity to build your network of advancement professionals from your host institution and CASE members leading the program. You’ll also meet hundreds of students from across the US, Europe and Canada who are passionate about advancement.

Simply put: Institutions know CASE. Being able to put that you were a CASE Advancement Intern on your resume will set you a part when you’re ready to look for your first advancement job!

Complete an online application by February 6, 2026. You will need to create an account before you begin.

The majority of our internship positions are in person. However, some host institutions may offer remote positions.

CASE will provide all applicants with access to this information during the application process. You will find with the list of host institutions; project descriptions; the stipend they are offering; and any additional benefits (i.e., housing, meal card, parking, etc).

Your application will be sent out to the institutions that you have selected the week of February 16, 2026. While you wait to hear from your selected schools, take the time to research the institution, the advancement office and the intern project description so you are well prepared to interview should you be invited to interview. (Please note: most interviews will take place online.)

Research the host institution and the advancement office. Look at their mission statement, core values, etc. so you can see how they align with yours and how you can be an asset to the team. Prepare three to five questions to ask at the end of the interview. Practice interviewing with a friend or a professional.

CASE will provide one webinar in late February for all external applicants providing both beneficial information and tips as applicants move through the interview process.

Yes. It is possible you may be invited by multiple schools to interview for a position. You are allowed to interview with all host institutions that contact you. Treat this as a job interview. Remember, just as hosts are interviewing you, you are interviewing them to make sure it’s the place you’d like to do an internship.

Applicants will be notified if they have been selected by March 31, 2026. Should a host institution need an extension to make their final decision, applicants will be notified.

The CASE Advancement Internship is competitive. We cannot guarantee that all applicants will be contacted for an interview and subsequently placed in an internship. Should you not be selected, CASE staff can offer assistance and coaching for applying the following year.

We understand that you may be invited to interview with multiple hosts. We recommend you having a conversation with any hosts who have made you an offer and set an agreed upon time that you will contact them to either accept or decline the offer. Your host is required to give you at least three business days to accept or decline an offer.

Because hosts will want to offer the opportunity to other candidates should you decline, we recommend making a decision within three business days of being offered the position.

Normally, housing is not provided by the institution, leaving the responsibility to you. Begin to prepare. If you have been selected by an institution that does not provide housing, we recommend you start early in finding a place to live that meets your needs.

CASE and your host institution will go over how and when you will be issued your stipend. Should your institution have CASE administer your stipend, you will receive it in two installments (Week 4 and Week 8).

CASE will send you a letter of acceptance for the Advancement Internship, and in the months leading up to your internship, CASE members will email you and your host institution with all the updates regarding your internship.

If you have any questions regarding the CASE Advancement Internship or the application process, please get in touch with Thais Andrade, Talent Coordinator, at [email protected]
