“New funds secured” provides a comprehensive measure of the impact and effectiveness of fund-raising efforts in a given year, capturing the value of new cash gifts, gifts of securities, gifts of real property, and other gifts in-kind as well as the total value of new gift commitments and pledges secured of up to five years duration. The measure excludes some philanthropic income received in the reporting year, notably payments on pledges secured in prior years.
New funds secured from 2018 was subtracted from 2019 for each institution, and the difference was divided by the 2018 total to get a percent change. A positive number indicates that New funds Secured increased from 2018 to 2019 and a negative number shows the opposite.
New Funds Secured was divided by student FTE for the 2019 data. This serves to normalize the impact of institution size on funds secured, which provides a more equitable comparison.

Cash income received in a year includes all cash which arrives during the year including new single cash gifts, cash payments received against pledges secured in this or previous years and cash from legacies. It reflects philanthropic revenue from fundraising conducted in the reporting year as well as income from gift commitments from prior years.
The Gift Band questions were optional in the survey, so data is not available for all institutions. The gift band data was reported for both Funds Secured and Cash Income. The following data reflects Cash Income.
These graphs further breakdown the giving data by showing the donors by Source over each of the Giving Bands. This view of the data displays how much each source contributes to each giving band.
