About The Voluntary Support of Education (VSE) Survey

The CASE Voluntary Support of Education (VSE) survey is the authoritative source of data on giving to higher education institutions in the US with 62 years of rigorous survey data. Nearly 1,000 institutions respond each year.

The 2018 survey collected data for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018, and ending June 30, 2019 (with a few institutions reporting on different fiscal calendars). Data shown are cash received, not pledges or commitments.

This presentation outlines your institution’s data alongside aggregate data from the overall survey population and your AMAtlas Peers. (See the following slide for more information.)

Key findings from the VSE survey are from US and Canadian institutions. Data are presented in a standardized format, with minimal analysis. Further analysis can be provided by CASE’s AMAtlas team using facilitated cohort groups and including an individualized call with your institution.

Higher education and AMAtlas peer results are presented as median figures in this presentation.

Peer Description

AMAtlas peer groups are based on a combination of core data points from the Voluntary Support of Education Survey and additional appended variables . An algorithm is used to select the twenty institutions most similar to yours based on data for fiscal year 2019. The following charts show trends in your institution and institutions similar to yours based purely on the selected data points. Your peer group is not necessarily an academic or aspirational peer group.

Cumulative Annual Growth

Cumulative annual growth for your institution was calculated by setting the first year of VSE participation since 2010 as the baseline. If your institution first submitted data in any year after 2010, that will be the base year. Percent change was calculated relative to the first year baseline. For AMAtlas peers and All Higher Ed, the first year baseline is always 2010.

Cumulative Annual Growth measures changes in Total Support over time. Total Support includes:

Gifts and grants to your institution, both for current operations and for capital purposes, regardless of form (cash, products, property, securities, etc.);
Gifts and grants to affiliated foundations and organizations created to raise funds for the institution;
Securities, real estate, equipment, property, or other noncash gifts, to be evaluated at the fair market value placed on them by an independent appraiser, not the cash income therefrom;
Deferred gifts (but not pledges or bequest intentions);
Cash surrender value of life insurance contracts;
Insurance premiums paid by donors;
Cash payments returned as contributions from salaried staff.
