1:15–1:45 Today’s CDO: Beyond Fundraising A presentation of findings from discussions with 65 leading CDOs about the role and how it has evolved.
1:45–3:00 Moderated Panel Presentation: CDO as Senior Strategic Leader A panel of CDOs will discuss their roles in fundraising and beyond fundraising and fundraising management, as senior officers of their institutions.
3:15-4:30 Moderated Discussion: Building Effective Partnerships Within the Advancement Team This session will discuss strategies to reduce competition and incentivize collaboration among advancement team members.
5:30–6:30 Networking Reception Successful CDOs are accomplished builders of “social capital.” A successful aspiring CDO builds relationships not only with donors, presidents, and other senior institutional leaders, but also with respected colleagues in the development profession. Come meet faculty members and fellow attendees from the all three CASE Senior Institutes in an informal setting for drinks and hors d’oeuvres following the first day of the institute.

8:00–9:15 Moderated Discussion: Partnership with Cabinet Colleagues We will look more closely at the CDO’s relationship with cabinet members—the CFO, the chief marketing and communications officer, the chief legal counsel, and others—identifying common missteps and best practices in building strong and successful relationships.
9:15–10:15 Presentation and Discussion: The CDO’s Role in Strategic Partnerships Paige Bartels, who has moved from CDO into a role in the president’s office focused on strategic institutional partnerships related to and beyond advancement, will discuss the CDO’s role in building effective partnerships, and opportunities for CDOs to grow into more expanded partnership-building roles in their institutions.
10:30–11:45 Advancement and the President
In this cross institute joint session, we will explore the relationship between advancement and the president from a variety of angles. In a moderated conversation, Steven Currall, president of the University of South Florida, and Cheyenne Currall will discuss the president's expectations of his senior alumni relations, development, and marketing and communications officers, including what he looks for in hiring, what he needs from them as members of his executive team, and what he expects from them and their teams in their individual areas. We will also look at advancement and the presidency from the perspective of the president’s spouse.
11:45 AM–1:30 PM All-Institute Luncheon Join attendees from the Senior Institutes in Alumni Relations and Communications and Marketing for a luncheon and facilitated conversation.
1:45–3:00 Presentation and Discussion: Embracing Donors as Partners Ron Schiller will discuss lessons drawn from his books, “Belief and Confidence” and “Raising Your Organization’s Largest Gifts.”

4:30–5:30 Institute Q&A This will be an opportunity to discuss some of the issues and challenges raised in plenary sessions and in small group discussions, with the whole group.

Few CDOs have had an opportunity to work closely with a board until they step into the CDO role. Board members are among a CDO’s most important partners, and they are at the same time the CEO’s bosses. We will discuss navigating access to and relationships with these critically important partners.

11:15 AM–NOON Moderated Discussion: Key Takeaways from the Conference
Presenters and moderators will summarize key points they hope each attendee will take from the conference. Attendees will be asked to highlight key lessons learned and will be given the chance to ask final questions.
