    2017 CASE Advancement Intern

    Paola Alonso

    Development Associate, University of California, Berkeley

    Paola Alonso is a 2017 CASE Advancement Intern, now working at the University of California, Berkeley as a development associate. She is a part of the Class Campaigns team, within Annual Programs, which raises funds from all undergraduate UC Berkeley alumni celebrating a major reunion. Her responsibilities include supporting two Class Giving Officers, who each manage two reunion classes. She also provides content for the Cal Reunions website, and helps administer the Cal Reunions social media pages.

    James Bresette

    Coordinator, Student and Talent Management Programs, Council for Advancement and Support of Education

    James Bresette is the coordinator for student and talent management programs for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. James provides day-to-day support for Diversity and Talent Management initiatives to include CASE Affiliated Student Advancement Programs (CASE ASAP) and the CASE Advancement Internship Program. He acts as a staff liaison for CASE ASAP advisors and executive board members as well as the summer interns. Lastly, James ensures that all information related to talent management and diversity programs are consistent across channels for CASE members and staff.

    Ian Buchanan

    Development Analyst, University of Georgia

    Ian Buchanan is a graduate of Georgia State University and was the 2017 CASE intern for the Georgia Institute of Technology. He joined the Division of Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Georgia in August 2018 as a Development Analyst. Ian is a member of the Advancement Research and Prospect Management team, focusing on major gift prospect identification and prospect research in support of UGA's $1.2 billion Commit to Georgia Campaign.

    Jennifer Cole

    Assistant for Annual Giving, Harvard Kennedy School of Government

    Jennifer Cole was a 2018 CASE intern for the Leadership Giving Team at Harvard Business School. She is now the assistant for annual giving at Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where she is responsible for coordinating projects and initiatives in support of the HKS Fund team. She works heavily on data analysis and direct marketing and stewardship execution. Before she went to Harvard world, Jen obtained a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies with a minor in non-profit studies from Emerson College in Boston. During her time at Emerson, she served as a Resident Assistant, an Eco-rep, a Producer for environmental theater, a founding member of the Student Alumni Association, Chair of the Senior Class Gift and a student caller and supervisor at the Phonathon for annual giving.

    Michael Cylkowski

    Advancement Communications and Events Coordinator, Michigan State University

    Michael Cylkowski is the advancement communications and events coordinator for Michigan State University's Office for International Advancement. In his role, Michael develops the content and strategy behind all international communications for 50,000+ MSU alumni, donors, and friends around the world. He also manages the planning and execution of the university's international events, including executive forums, parent receptions, and alumni reunions. Lastly, Michael oversees MSU's international annual giving efforts, focusing particularly on young alumni constituents.

    Deloan D'sa

    Advancement Coordinator, The York School

    Deloan D'sa started working at The York School as an advancement coordinator to develop the school's parent volunteer and engagement program. Today, Deloan had expanded her portfolio to include building the alumni program for young and experience alumni. In addition to this she works as an Event Coordinator and specializes in planning and executing various cultivation and stewardship events.

    Matilda Dada

    2019-20 CASE North America Fundraising Resident, University of Iowa

    Matilda is an alumna of Berea College where she received her start in Development. She also served as a CASE Advancement Intern in 2018 for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). While an undergraduate, Matilda worked in Annual Giving and served as coordinator for the college’s student philanthropy program. During her CASE Internship at VCU, she worked to launch the university’s crowdfunding platform, assisted in planning the inaugural Giving Day, and played a vital role in their Charitable Solicitation Project. Matilda is now a CASE Resident serving on the University of Iowa Center for Advancement Regional Gifts team for Main Campus. She travels the country meeting with major gift prospects and securing gifts for the University.

    Betsy Edler

    Betsy Edler

    Development Assistant, Iowa State University Foundation

    Betsy Edler joined the Iowa State University Foundation in Ames, Iowa in June 2017 as a development assistant in the Central Development Office and the college of Design. She is part of a team of 100+ development professionals whose current campaign goal is to raise a record $1.1 billion for Iowa State University. She assists in a variety of campaign initiatives as well as day-to-day functions, including regional prospect research and documentation, collegiate advancement council coordination, and gift proposal creation.

    Nicole Evans

    Coordinator, Board and Donor Relations, University of Illinois Foundation

    Nicole is the coordinator for board and donor relations at the University of Illinois Foundation.  Nicole provides support in the areas of events, donor and community relations, and helps to support the UIF Board of Directors.  She aides in the development of programming for guests of the board of directors during board meetings, and manages the CASE Reuss Internship Program at UIF as well as the event management software.

    Assistant Director of Leadership Annual Giving, The Ohio State University

    Lyric Fields is the Assistant Director of Leadership Annual Giving at The Ohio State University. In this role she works closely with College of Social Work, Arts and Sciences, and Optometry to engage their alumni base philanthropically across the country. She travels on behalf of the university to meet face-to-face with alumni and secure gifts, focusing on the $3k - $99k range.

    Elinor Fortescue

    Program Coordinator, Drexel University

    Elinor Fortescue was a 2019 CASE Summer Intern at Drexel University. She was on a rotating schedule through four major departments in Institutional Advancement. She now joins Drexel University’s Institutional Advancement office in her new role as The Drexel Fund’s Program Coordinator! Elinor graduated from Ashland University (Ashland, OH) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. During her time at Ashland she served on the Campus Activities Board executive council, and her sorority’s executive council as Chapter President. Elinor was a student caller in the phone program, became the call center supervisor and worked closely with the annual giving team. As The Drexel Fund’s Program Coordinator, Elinor will be taking over the phone program solicitations and operations. In addition to overseeing the phone program, she will be, managing, streamlining and enhancing the matching gift program at Drexel University, and will be part of all of the Drexel Fund’s initiatives this year.

    Assistant Director, Student Alumni-Programs, Purdue Alumni Association

    LaDarius Gorden oversees the Senior Year Experience and Recent Graduate Programs, which provides help in the transition process from student to successful alum. Once alumni status is established, LaDarius is there to present opportunities and advice that will aid in post-graduate life to ensure that recent alum are utilizing all resources the Purdue Alumni Association make available in order to build the foundation to a prosperous career. LaDarius' varied background in student affairs, peer mentoring, and fundraising has fueled him to the position he is in today. He is very passionate about giving back to the community through service and advocacy, making sure that he stays directly connected in order to walk with individuals on the path to success. Being a First Generation college graduate, his primary goal is to show that he is a living testament of an individual who has been resilient in life's battles and that no amount of trouble can prevent anyone from staying determined to reach their goals and true potential.

    Mary Kate Hansen

    Project Coordinator, St. Vincent Foundation

    Mary Kate Hansen is the Project Coordinator for the St. Vincent Foundation in Indianapolis, IN. She oversees volunteers for the large-scale events, nursing and non-clinical scholarships, and board relations. She works with a team of individuals to support special fundraising initiatives such as Peyton Manning Children's Hospital, the St. Vincent House and the St. Vincent Heart Center, along with many others.

    Mariana Herrera

    Annual Funds Programs, Columbia University

    Mariana Herrera currently serves as the assistant director for annual fund programs at Columbia University in the Office of Alumni and Development. In this role she assists in the planning, implementation, and management of direct marketing efforts for various schools and programs. Her areas of focus also include recent grad and student philanthropy, student call center efforts as well as crowdfunding activities for Annual Fund Programs.

    Tracy Kamen

    Associate Director, CCS Fundraising

    Tracy Kamen is an Associate Director at CCS Fundraising, a leading global fundraising consulting and management firm, which provides development services and strategic consulting to nonprofit organizations worldwide. Tracy recently completed a Planning Study at a large client in Northwest DC, in which CCS conducts strategic discussions with major stakeholders and presents a detailed recommendation for beginning a successful capital campaign. She is currently serving as the campaign director for an multi-million dollar fundraising effort on the same client site.

    Katie Kowalski

    Communications Associate, George Washington University

    Katie is an alumna of Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!) and was the 2018 CASE Intern for William & Mary. While an undergraduate at Virginia Tech, she worked as the development intern for the Newman Community, Virginia Tech's Catholic campus ministry, where she helped attain $25k in grant funding. She now currently works as a Communications Associate within The George Washington University's Division of Development and Alumni Relations. She is responsible for all communications and collateral pertaining to GW's development events.

    Development Coordinator, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies

    Sophia recently received her BA in International Languages & Culture, French and Global Studies from St. Mary's College of Maryland. She comes from a background of development, having worked in student philanthropy and fundraising during her time at St. Mary's College of Maryland. During the summer before her senior year Sophia was a CASE intern for the Johns Hopkins Office of Annual Giving. She is especially passionate about stewardship, fully understanding the power of a meaningful and result-oriented acknowledgment process, and how it can profoundly impact constituent engagement. Sophia loved her CASE experience at JHU and knew it'd be a great place to start her career. Sophia joined the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Development and Alumni Relations team last month as the development coordinator.

    Gerald Marquez

    Gerald Marquez

    Assistant Prospect Analyst, Caltech

    Gerald Marquez is an assistant prospect analyst at Caltech, aiding development efforts for their $2 billion goal in “Breakthrough, The Caltech Campaign.”  He also serves as development manager at Environic Foundation International, lending his knowledge on project management, change management, prospect management and research to support fundraising efforts to develop EFI’s capacity to address social, economic and environmental challenges around the world. During his 2018 CASE Internship, he developed an automated workflow for gift agreements at Caltech, earning a Gold CASE Award of Excellence. Gerald received his B.S. in Business Administration from the University of California, Riverside and worked for their Undergraduate Admissions, Alumni & Constituent Relations, School of Business, and Student Life offices. He looks forward to continuing his career in advancement and higher education.

    John Matthews

    Associate Director of Foundation Relations, University of California, San Diego

    John joined the Advancement team at UC San Diego in 2017 and holds the position of Associate Director of Foundation Relations, having also served as a major gift officer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.  In his current role, John holds a robust portfolio of national private foundations and works to support all areas of the UC San Diego campus, focusing on data science, engineering, human-centered design, and basic science research, as well as running a program for young and early-career investigators.  Prior to joining UC San Diego, John served in multiple administrative roles at Nebraska-based education access nonprofits, and also conducted research as a technologist in a virology and oncology lab at Creighton University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, respectively.  John holds a B.S. in Microbiology from Creighton University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Nebraska.

    Devyn Maugel

    Manager of Development Operations and Donor Stewardship, Purdue University Convocations

    Devyn Maugel works for Convocations at Purdue University. This is an organization that brings world-class performing arts to West Lafayette, Indiana and has been around since 1902. Devyn oversees the annual fund for his unit and continues to develop the donor pipeline through various initiatives. He also works with corporations that sponsor events ran by Convocations. This includes everything from making asks to stewarding sponsors after a show. Lastly, Devyn is in charge of his unit's stewardship program. He assures that everyone from acquired donors to top-level donors see how their contribution is making a difference in the lives of those in the community. As a part of stewarding his donors, Devyn creates unique events where artists are able to interact with donors on a more personal level. Before this position, Devyn was a 2018 CASE intern at Kansas State University. During his internship, he helped set the groundwork for the university's first 24-hour giving campaign.

    Chase McNamee

    Stewardship Manager, Bank Street College of Education

    Chase McNamee is serving as the Stewardship Manager for the Development & External Relations Office at Bank Street College of Education in New York City. At Bank Street, Chase oversees and manages all stewardship activities. This includes assisting with the stewardship and endowment reports for the institution, working closely with the frontline fundraising team on stewardship programs and planning, and managing stewardship visits and activities for major gift donors. He is currently in the doctoral program at Teachers College, Columbia University in Higher & Postsecondary Education, where his research focuses on philanthropy and alumni relations. He also serves as the Editorial Assistant for the academic journal, Philanthropy & Education. 

    Brea Miller

    Brea Miller

    Assistant Director of Alumni Programs, Texas Woman's University

    Brea’ Miller received her Bachelors from University of Central Oklahoma and Masters at the University of Central Missouri. She worked as an Annual Giving graduate assistant while in grad school and is where she was introduced to advancement. In fall 2017 she received the “Emerging Student” scholarship, where she was able to attend her first CASE conference and was introduced to Sue Cunningham who spoke about CASE Advancement Internship Program. As the annual giving graduate assistant, she supervised student callers for the phon-a-thon program and helped execute the first-ever giving day. She also served as a CASE intern in 2018 and 2019 for Georgia College and State University (GCSU). In summer 2018, she worked closely with the athletics Development Officer and helped them build a crowdfunding page for their athletics department and later the university. In summer 2019, she worked with all the Development Officers to create their first-ever "GC Giving Challenge" which launched in September 2019. The “GC Giving Challenge” was a 48hr fundraising challenge for the four colleges, the library and campus initiatives to fundraise for a project in their respective departments. Since participating in the CASE Advancement Internship Program, she has become the Assistant Director of Alumni Programs at Texas Woman’s University, where she works closely with alumni chapters and affinity groups to help market and plan alumni events in their areas.

    Development Associate, Major Gifts, University of Pennslyvania

    Morgan Mount is the Development Associate for Major Gifts New York at the University of Pennsylvania. Morgan provides day-to-day support for the New York Regional Major Gifts team. In this role, she works within the database to ensure donor files are accurate and works with gift officers to design gift agreements. Lastly, Morgan collaborates with campus partners to compile research on philanthropic priorities across Penn’s Schools and Centers.

    Jessica Munoz-Sainz

    Assistant Director for Annual Giving, California State University of Los Angeles

    Jessica Munoz-Sainz was an Intern for CASE at Johns Hopkins University in 2018. She received my Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Anthropology from San Francisco State University and my Master’s degree in Bioarchaeology from the University of Indianapolis. She started her career path into the fundraising world as a phonathon caller which turned into a great opportunity into running her own team of callers as a graduate student. She is now employed as the Assistant Director for Annual Giving at the California State University of Los Angeles where her primary focus as assistant director for annual giving at Cal State LA is the Phon-a-thon program. She oversee a team of 25 students that fundraise for the university’s Cal State LA Fund.

    Strategic Marketing Coordinator, Washington State University

    Shelly Neuhart has recently accepted a position at the Washington State University Foundation after completing an internship with them this summer through the CASE Advancement Internship Program. She will be working in Annual Giving as their Strategic Marketing Coordinator. She will oversee their student giving initiatives, recent grad programs, and advise the student organization PAWS (Philanthropy @ Washington State). Also, Shelly will be analyzing internal data along with researching industry trends to assist in the development of creating strategic marketing plans for Annual Giving.

    Jonathan Overstreet
    2018 CASE ADVANCEMENT INTERN

    Jonathan Overstreet

    Assistant Director of Regional Advancement, The College of William and Mary

    Jonathan Overstreet is the assistant director of regional advancement for the D.C. Metro region at William & Mary. Jonathan works as an extension of all campus based schools and units in Williamsburg, VA to engage alumni in the Washington D.C. Metro area to (1) attended regional alumni events, and (2) contribute philanthropically to their Alma mater. In this role, Jonathan is tasked to solicit major gifts ($10K - $100K) from a portfolio of around 150 prospects. I'm addition to his fundraising efforts, he also attends special events in the D.C. Metro area focused on alumni engagement.  

    Sarah Perry

    Sarah Perry

    Associate Director of Development, The Everglades Foundation

    Sarah Perry has had a passion for South Florida's waterways all of her life. She earned her bachelors degree in Hospitality Management from the University of Central Florida. Her studies focused on event management as well as development and advancement in higher education. Following graduation, Sarah studied at the University of Houston as the Council of Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) intern during the summer months of 2018 assisting in their efforts for the University's first billion-dollar campaign. Sarah grew up in South Florida and was raised in a household where a normal dinner table conversation consisted of Everglades restoration and the condition of the connecting waterways. She knew that being able to do her part to restore our beautiful ecosystem through The Everglades Foundation was a once in a lifetime opportunity that could not be passed up. Sarah enjoys horseback riding, boating with her family and being outdoors.

    Jesus Rangel

    Jesus Rangel

    Assistant Director of Development for Scholarships and University Initiatives, Oregon State University Foundation

    Jesus Rangel has been part of the Oregon State University Foundation since 2018 and is the current Assistant Director of Development for Scholarships and University Initiatives, working closely with university leadership, to increase philanthropic support for student scholarships and programs. As a first-generation student he is an advocate for philanthropy in higher education in order to advance education worldwide and transform lives.

    Jesus earned his B.A. from Texas State University and is actively pursuing his MBA in organizational leadership from Oregon State University. He is a longtime member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, participating in the CASE Internship program, part of the inaugural graduate trainee program and actively serves as a volunteer for the district 8 opportunity and inclusion committee. Jesus also serves on his alma maters alumni board as a director at large and is a faculty advisor for Sigma Chi Fraternity at Oregon State.

    When Jesus isn’t further investing himself in the world of advancement, he enjoys working with students interested in attending college and talking with current students on the importance of networking. He also enjoys the occasional travel trips with friends.

    Program Manager, Michigan State University

    Terrance Range is Program Manager for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Michigan State University in the Office for International Studies and Programs (ISP). The vision of the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is to educate and develop academically qualified yet economically disadvantaged young people in Africa who will contribute to the transformation of the continent. In addition, as a university-level office under the leadership of an associate provost and dean, ISP supports international activities throughout the institution, working to mobilize MSU's research and scholarship, enhance study abroad and other educational programs, form and strengthen international partnerships and welcome and support international visitors, scholars and students. 

    Alex Rodriguez

    Alex Rodriguez

    Student Philanthropy Manager, UC Berkeley

    Alex Rodriguez is a 2018 CASE Advancement Intern and recent graduate from the Class of 2019 of UC Berkeley, now working at UC Berkeley as the Student Philanthropy Manager. He interned for UC Berkeley's University Development and Alumni Relations office, focusing his internship on conducting crowdfunding + psychology research, recruiting on-campus organizations for development opportunities, and assisting with social media strategies. After his enlightening, engaging, and fun experience as a CASE Intern, Alex rejoined Annual Programs now as Student Philanthropy Manager. He is part of the Next Generation Philanthropy Team, which aims to attract and educate current students and recent alumni about philanthropy. His responsibilities include developing a 2-3 year strategy to bring in more student donors, managing UC Berkeley's student philanthropy club, and serving as the liaison between Cal students and the development office.

    Program Coordinator, Alumni Relations, Drexel University

    Diamond Schuler was a 2018 CASE Advancement intern at Drexel University where she did a rotation in the four major departments of institutional advancement. She is now a program coordinator in the alumni relations office at Drexel University. Where she works with several of the university’s colleges and schools, shared-interest groups and athletics to increase alumni engagement and build relationships. Before beginning her time as Drexel Dragon, Diamond graduated Summa Cum Laude with her B.A. in Communication Studies with a concentration in Public Relations/Advertising and Event Planning in May 2018. During her time at Widener she was president of Lambda Pi Eta, vice president of Widener’s PRSSA chapter, fundraising chair of the Black Student Union, campus tour guide, transfer student ambassador and communication studies ambassador.

    Senior Administrative Assistant for Alumni Relations, Saint Joseph’s University

    Michael Schwartz is the senior administrative assistant for alumni relations at Saint Joseph’s University. He works to support his active team and engage with passionate alumni association members throughout the country. Michael was a 2017 CASE Advancement Intern at the University of Pennsylvania. His time in the program helped to open doors and hone valuable skills that apply to his current position. Michael's favorite element about working within the world of Advancement is the ability to give back and help pave the way for future success stories.

    Codi Smith

    Associate Director of Stewardship, LSU Foundation

    Codi Smith currently serves as the associate director of stewardship at the LSU Foundation. Her role includes gift acknowledgements, donor reporting, and donor relations support to the schools and colleges of LSU. In 2018 she completed the CASE Advancement Internship Program with the Texas A&M Foundation where she worked on stewardship planning for corporate and foundation relations as well as strategic planning for the endowment report.  She notes her three-fold experience as a CASE intern, graduate of the Bush School of Government and Public Service, and AmeriCorps alum the motivation behind her commitment to philanthropy and the nonprofit sector at large.

    Annual Giving Coordinator, University of California, San Francisco

    Sydney Smith is the Annual Giving Coordinator at the University of California - San Francisco, In her role, Sydney is responsible for piloting all calling and texting solicitation strategies across UCSF’s different professional schools. Sydney was formerly a CASE Advancement Intern in 2018 for Dartmouth College. In addition to her time as a CASE Advancement intern, Sydney has also worked in Development at OneTrack International and the University of San Francisco. She is a graduate of the University of San Francisco with a degree in Management. Sydney is originally from Highlands Ranch, Colorado and is a huge Denver Broncos fan.

    Jon Soderlund

    Prospect Management Analyst, North Central College

    Jon Soderlund serves as the prospect management analyst for North Central College, a private liberal arts college in Naperville, IL. Jon was first introduced to prospect management and research as a 2017 CASE Intern at the Harvard Business School. In his current role, Jon is responsible for developing and sustaining the movement of major gift prospects through the development cycle to ensure optimization of giving. He does this through consulting development officers to target the right prospects while simultaneously assisting in managing their portfolios.

    Stewardship & Donor Engagement - CASE Resident, Kansas State University Foundation

    H. Ryan Steele is an imaginative advancement professional whose early career has focused on stewardship and the donor experience. After completing the CASE Advancement Internship Program with the Kansas State University Foundation, he found his passion for the field of donor relations and joined the team at K-State as a resident in the inaugural year of the CASE North America Fundraising Residency Program upon his graduation from Morehead State University.

    Advancement Officer, Alumni Relations & Annual Giving, OISE, University of Toronto

    Suryana Thappa is an Advancement Officer at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. Under the direction of the Director of Advancement & External Relations at OISE, Suryana coordinates and ensures the successful execution of Leadership Annual Giving appeals at OISE. She oversees stewardship related correspondence such as thank-you letters or messages and impact reports, in addition to planning and executing all Advancement related events & awards programming at OISE. Suryana also provides support with the processing and logging of donations, in addition to assisting with the coordination of Donor Financial Reports and Alumni Communications at OISE.

    Talia Vilaplana

    Project Associate, Major Gifts, New York University Langone

    Talia Vilaplana is the project associate to the Major Gifts team for The NYU Langone office of Development and Alumni Affairs. She works closely with front line fundraisers to write proposals for donors, create gift contracts, assist in stewardship strategies, and acts as a liaison between hospital administrators and the Major Gifts team. She coordinates donor visits and tours, as well as manage agendas for upcoming strategy meetings with the team and partnering physicians. In her role, she works cross departmentally with gifts processing, prospect research, and communications teams to streamline tasks such as submitting donations, creating research briefs for events, and conducting large mailings.

    Daijeonna Walker

    Coordinator of Advancement and Alumni Services, Emory University’s School of Law

    Daijeonna Walker is the coordinator of advancement and alumni services at Emory University’s School of Law. She recently graduated from Emory College with a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and Human Biology as well as a Bachelor of Arts in African-American Studies. Daijeonna was the 2018 CASE Summer Intern for the Goizueta Business School at Emory. As a student, she worked in the Office of Annual Giving, and as a Telefund caller and supervisor. She also served as an ambassador and task force member for the Day of Giving campaign, All in A Day. In her new role, Daijeonna will work closely with many members of Emory’s School of Law and central Advancement and Alumni Engagement communities, assisting with a wide variety of projects. She will also be working to build mutually beneficial relationships, improve communication and collaborative teamwork, and increase campus understanding of advancement and alumni engagement processes.

    Jasmine Williams

    Associate Director of Annual Giving, Emory University

    Jasmine Williams is the associate director of annual giving at Emory University, where she devotes her expertise to co-managing the Telefund student caller program. She recruits, trains, and coaches a staff of 75 of Emory's bright and brilliant undergraduate and graduate students. Prior to the beginning of her career in development Jasmine obtained a dual bachelor's degree in Biology and Religion from Emory University's College of Arts and Sciences. During her time at Emory she served, for three years, as a senior student researcher in the Department of Physiology, a representative on the Annual Giving Board, a leader in a plethora of volunteer organizations, and four years as a student caller and supervisor at the Telefund. She is ecstatic to continue her service to the Emory community through both her volunteer and development efforts!
