UK Fundraising for Leadership Study Tour
The UK experience provides a valuable place to start in thinking about the cultural and institutional issues that impact on the success of fundraising. Our programme provides you with many opportunities to engage with senior colleagues, including institutional leaders, who will share a range of experiences. You will learn about and from a number of case studies. You will hear about some of the most successful advancement programmes in the UK – some continuing to build on almost 30 years of experience - while others will be much more recent. So, whether you want to learn something about fundraising, alumni engagement and related work for the first time; to really focus on what might work in your own institution; look at the role that advancement plays in a range of institutions; to consider how you might grow your own programme; or build one from scratch, this tour provides it all.
You will visit three host universities and finish with the Strategic Fundraising for Senior Leaders conference – hearing from over 30 advancement professionals during the course of the week.

As a newly-hired President of an institutional foundation in the Middle East with no formal experience in foundation organization or traditional fund-raising practices, I was eager to join the UK Study Tour. From the very first night, I knew I would not be disappointed! As I told my fellow participants, for me it was much akin to "drinking from a fire hose" because there was so much information coming at me at one time, due in large part to my own inexperience. Nonetheless, the organizers and my fellow participants readily took me under their collective wing and gave me tons of information and experienced advice I would never have gleaned on my own working in Kurdistan. Seeing how British universities had to ramp up fund-raising on relatively short notice, and how they were able to implement not only the "tried and true" methods of fundraising from the States, but also innovate and adapt to their cultural milieu, was inspiring and encouraging for me as I face many of the same issues in Iraq. After the tour concluded, and I returned to Kurdistan, I was able to stay in touch with people and continue to get good advice. By the end of the first full day of programming, I knew this was money very well spent and it would have been a bargain at twice the price! I cannot recommend this study tour enough!

Colin McCallum has over twenty five years' experience in leading higher education and cultural development and marketing and is former Executive Director, University Advancement at the University of Salford. Other roles include President of Glasgow Caledonian University Foundation and Chief Executive of leading international philanthropic consulting firm Grenzebach Glier + Associates in Europe. Colin is currently a partner with the new and growing consulting firm Cairney and Company. Previously Colin served as: Director, Marketing and Development, at the National Museums of Scotland; Director, External Affairs and Development at the University of Strathclyde (running a programme which won Gold in the UK Professional Fundraising Awards for the best educational campaign); Development Officer St Hilda's College, Oxford and Alumni Relations Officer at the University of Edinburgh. His career began in The Netherlands where he was Promotions Manager with Martinus Nijhoff Publishers.
Colin graduated in English and Business Studies with a BA and an MSc in Business Administration from the University of Edinburgh. He is a former member of the Board of Scottish Opera, is currently a Trustee of The Willow Tearooms Trust in Glasgow and he is a regular speaker at CASE events and conferences across Europe.
