    This conference features three front line practitioners who are national leaders in the field of planned giving and major gift development. You'll be immersed in discussions about planned gift prospects – their motivations and practical consideration regarding assets and timing, learning to close larger gifts than you may have thought possible.

    This workshop is designed for newcomers to the advancement profession and professionals with mid-level responsibility. The workshop can be stand-alone, or as a primer if you want to refresh yourself on the essentials of planned giving before taking a deeper dive with our Structuring Major Gifts conference following the workshop.

    Welcome and Introductions  
    Meet your conference faculty and fellow attendees and learn how to make the most of your time together.

    10:30 – 11:00  
    The Big Picture: Definitions and Practice

    What do we mean when we say “planned giving”?  Is that totally separate from major giving? We’ll start with a discussion of the practice of planned giving and its role in educational advancement, basics on assets and timing, and set our course for the rest of the conference.

    Understanding Donors and Prospects

    We will discuss how to identify your best prospects for a planned gift; develop a communications/marketing plan that targets these prospects to engage and motivate them;  and utilize proactive listening skills that will lead you to helpful and revealing clues along the way. This session will also examine how major and planned gift colleagues can partner in order to optimize results and make the most effective use of available resources. Last but not least, we will spend some time discussing how to best approach documentation of planned gifts.

    Gifts, Money and Taxes 101

    Far from a dry, boring lecture, this highly interactive session will help us explore the tax structure that influences donors’ decision on whether, when, and how to make charitable gifts.

    3:30 – 4:45 
    Cash Isn’t Always King: A Portfolio of Assets

    The biggest gift a donor can make may be something other than cash.  This session will review the benefits and challenges of the most common types of non-cash gifts, and look at ways to uncover these opportunities.

    4:45 – 5:30  
    Faculty Q&A Open Forum  

    Come ready to discuss with your colleagues a planned giving challenge you’re facing in your own work, and get suggestions from the faculty -- or maybe stump them entirely!

    5:30 – 6:30  
    Networking Reception  

    Join conference speakers and fellow conference attendees to socialize after the first day of the conference. Drink tickets and hors d'oeuvres will be provided.

    Gift Plans: Part 1  

    In this first session on gift plans, we will discuss fundamental planned and deferred giving methods including bequests, life insurance, IRAs and other qualified retirement plans, as well as life income gifts. Case studies and role play will be utilized to help demonstrate situations and prospects where these various gift vehicles will result in best outcomes.

    Gift Plans: Part 2
    This session will continue our review of the different ways that people can give. We then will discuss several case studies to explore how these plans can help donors meet their goals.

    Faculty Panel:
    Gift Planning Programs Within Institutional Advancement 
    After a day-and-a-half of technical conversations, the faculty will strive to answer your remaining questions and discuss ideas for successful planned programs within larger development operations.
