James H. Johnson Jr.
James H. Johnson Jr. is the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of strategy and entrepreneurship and director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center at the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Johnson examines the causes and consequences of growing inequality in American society, particularly as it affects socially and economically disadvantaged youth; entrepreneurial approaches to poverty alleviation, job creation, and community development; inter-ethnic minority conflict in advanced industrial societies; and business demography and workforce diversity issues. He received his PhD from Michigan State University, his MS from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and his BS from North Carolina Central University.

Community colleges educate more than half of the students in US higher education today. Unfortunately, fundraising and advancement efforts lag behind four-year colleges and universities. Join this workshop and connect with community colleges on topics ranging from alumni, marketing, fundraising and grants. Meet and network with colleagues from across the southeast and take away some helpful information to grow advancement at your institution.

Emerging Trends
Advancement work is crucial to the success of the institutions we serve. As with most organizations, the only constant is change. With the Emerging Trends workshop, we will tackle several topics such as how to engage Generation Z and manage leadership transitions to discuss free speech issues, legislative concerns, and the rise of massive capital campaigns. You will leave with takeaways from each topic and the tools in hand to address these topics on your campus.

If you are new to the profession and want to receive a solid overview of Advancement work, then the Newcomers Workshop is for you. Sessions range from some basic professional development to understanding advancement jargon to developing an appreciation for the work we do. Come hear from seasoned advancement professionals from all four disciplines about what it takes to be successful.
Opportunity and Inclusion
The Opportunity and Inclusion Workshop will focus on emerging philanthropic markets and diverse engagement strategies. Attendees will learn about the impact of diverse philanthropy and best practices for fundraising from diverse constituencies. This workshop is for advancement professionals at all levels.
