Advancing Your Institution: Coordinating Grant and Foundation Functions

Katie Shultz, Executive Director of Grants Development, St. Petersburg College

With limited means and a growing number of institutional priorities, it is more important than ever that organizations corral resources to focus on dedicated institutional advancement. Last year, St. Petersburg College (SPC) found itself needing to redefine and realign resource development in order to move the institution forward – ultimately placing both the Grants and Marketing/Communication Departments under the VP of Institutional Advancement/Executive Director of the Foundation. The totality of this endeavor has included successes, challenges, and lessons learned. Having struggled through everything from What is defined as a ‘grant’? to Who counts the ‘win’?, this session will share tangible strategies to be applied to Grants professionals who find themselves in similar staffing structures or simply want to learn how to work better with their institution’s Foundation. The session will also include an open dialog with grant colleagues, as a way to share struggles and wins related to collaborative Grant Department/College Foundation efforts.

How to Deliver a Stellar Grant Summit

Elizabeth Thompson, Executive Director, Resource Development and Grants, Lone Star College

A college-wide Grant Summit can position your department as professional and effective grant professionals, develop consistency in the college grant process and introduce new faculty, staff and administrators to the grant application and grant management process. A system-wide survey at Lone Star College revealed a strong need for college-wide education in grants. The resulting Grant Summit was a success and it has been an annual event every year since. Learners will walk away with sample programs, a how-to project management task list, and engaging ideas for bringing grant topics to life for participants. The end result of a successful Grant Summit event is increased visibility, a greater understanding of grant processes and why they exist, and a clearer understanding of grant accountability. In the long run, the increased knowledge throughout the college assists the grants department throughout the year.
