Alex Trebek: Future Taft College Student?

Started just two years ago, the West Kern Petroleum Summit (featured in the February 2014 Community College Advancement News), scored quite the coup in 2015: "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek served as emcee of the event.

The unlikely connection emerged after an article in the Huffington Post, in which Trebek talked about what he might do when he retires. "When I finish as the host of 'Jeopardy!' I'm going to go up to Taft in central California. They have a small college there that teaches you about oil drilling. I'd like to take a course," he was quoted as saying. (Taft College is part of the West Kern Community College District.)

Hearing that, Foundation Executive Director Sheri Horn-Bunk invited Trebek to the event and he agreed to emcee—without compensation. To return the gesture, Horn-Bunk told him they would name a scholarship after the noted game show host.

She was even more delighted to receive a hand-written thank-you note from Trebek that included a $10,000 contribution. "He said that he would be remiss if he allowed us to name a scholarship after him and he not contribute to it," Horn-Bunk said.
