Tips for Executing Ideas

A leadership expert says that managers must quickly turn great ideas into reality before inspiration dissipates.

Scott Belsky, chief executive of organizational design company Behance, recently spoke with Inc. about executing creative ideas in the workplace. He suggests the following:

  • Understand the life cycle of ideas. Belsky explains that, when an idea is born, energy and excitement are high. Excitement typically drops when work begins and the idea turns from an "important" goal into an "urgent" task.
  • Make workflow forward-thinking, not just reactionary. Belsky says that good leaders need to make time for deep thinking by "creating windows of non-stimulation." During this time, they should read and process reports and data but not react to them. This will help managers clear their minds and formulate how to implement a clear plan.
  • Hold team members accountable. Belsky says that effective teams hold each member accountable for his or her contributions. For this to happen, there must be a leader who knows each person's strengths, he says.
