Would you risk 12,000 bee stings to raise university funds? Washington State University Provost Dan Bernardo took that chance for the "Bee Like Dan" event, wearing a beard of about 12,000 live bees for nearly 20 minutes to raise awareness and funding for a new honeybee research center. As former dean of the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences, he's passionate about honeybee research and raising funds for the university. Fortunately, he suffered only one sting. "It was my own fault," Bernardo says. "Somebody gave me a thumbs-up, and I gave them one back. When I closed my fist, one was sitting there. She didn't know any better." The effort raised $142,000. And a lot of buzz about fundraising.
