The Origins of Homecoming

In 1911, worried about embarrassing attendance numbers, the University of Missouri's football coach and athletic director invited alumni to "come home" to watch the Tigers take on rival Kansas for the first time on home turf. More than 9,000 fans attended. This event, according to such noteworthy sources as Jeopardy! and Trivial Pursuit, makes Missouri the inventor of homecoming. But was Missouri really the first?
