Access and Social Mobility: Fundraising and the Role of the University

In response to the growing needs of our community, CASE have created a brand new conference specifically aimed at professionals managing strategy and developing an institutional case for support. 

Social mobility is the defining policy imperative of our time. Educational institutions, and universities have long been considered bastions of social equality, enabling students to realise their potential irrespective of background, and pioneering research that promotes global economic, cultural and medical wellbeing.

On the ground, development offices are increasingly engaging with supporters who are interested in widening access, and in the broader role that universities can play in driving social equality. What does the evidence tell us about where these funds can be best directed? Do bursaries make a difference? What are governments across Europe doing in this space? What models of fundraising most inspire and engage donors, and what invaluable contributions can be made by alumni relations and communications? How can fundraisers respond to "difficult questions"?

Jointly chaired by Tricia King (VP Global Engagement, CASE) and NIk Miller (Director, The Bridge Group), this interactive event will briefly explore important macro-issues (including declining trust in the system, the effects of globalisation, and the role of universities in this climate). It will also more substantially deliver practical advice, and engage attendees directly in the debate about how universities can most effectively fundraise for support in this area.

Target Audience
Senior leaders and colleagues in development and widening participation / access at all levels should be interested in this session, and especially those managing strategy and developing an institutional case for support. Policy-makers, institutional leaders, and communications colleagues should be equally interested, especially where they are engaged in corporate and government relations. The session will be a lively mix of new, provocative evidence, practical examples and implications, and facilitated debate.

Learning Outcomes
Attendees will:
• Understand better the access and social mobility landscape, and the implications of this for successful fundraising and engagement;
• Draw on an evidence base regarding access and social mobility to inform fundraising strategies;
• Hear directly from donors who have invested in university access
• Draw on this evidence in proposals, conversations and stewardship activities with donors;
• Understand better the priorities and drivers for relevant colleagues, including widening access teams, careers services and student services, to help inform funding proposals;
• Draw on best practice to demonstrate impact to donors who are supporting access initiatives.
