Tyler Thomas builds award-winning brand engagement for the "BIG RED" brand. He directs the universities strategic functions integrating social media, videography, photography, project management and graphic design to deliver an effective communication strategy and editorial plan. Tyler is a national presenter on social media and a self-proclaimed foodie. He authored Nebraska Beer and writes regularly for local publications.

Tyler holds a master's degree in higher education administration from the University of Nebraska and teaches Digital Content Strategy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism.

Keynote Speaker

Walter M. Kimbrough

Walter M. Kimbrough
President
Dillard University

A native of Atlanta, Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough was his high school salutatorian and student body president in 1985, and went on to earn degrees from the University of Georgia, Miami University in Ohio, and a doctorate in higher education from Georgia State University. He has enjoyed a fulfilling career in student affairs, serving at Emory University, Georgia State University, Old Dominion University, and finally Albany State University in 2000 where he became the vice president for student affairs. In October of 2004, he was named the 12th president of Philander Smith College. In 2012 he became the 7th president of Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Kimbrough has been recognized for his research and writings on HBCUs and African American men in college. Kimbrough also has been noted for his active use of social media in articles by The Chronicle of Higher Education, and in the book Follow The Leader: Lessons in Social Media Success from Higher Ed CEOs. He was cited in 2010 by Bachelors Degree.org as one of 25 college presidents you should follow on Twitter, by Education Dive in 2017 as one of 10 Twitter accounts every higher ed leader should follow (@HipHopPrez), and in 2015 he was named by The Best Schools.org as one of the 20 most interesting college presidents.

A 1986 initiate of the Zeta Pi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at the University of Georgia, Kimbrough was the Alpha Phi Alpha College Brother of the Year for the Southern Region and served as the southern region assistant vice president. Dr. Kimbrough has forged a national reputation as an expert on fraternities and sororities, with specific expertise regarding historically Black, Latin and Asian groups. He is the author of the book, Black Greek 101: The Culture, Customs and Challenges of Black Fraternities and Sororities.

Dr. Kimbrough was named the 1994 New Professional of the Year for the Association of Fraternity Advisors. In 2009, he was named by Diverse Issues in Higher Education as one of 25 To Watch. In 2010, he made the coveted Ebony Magazine Power 100 list of the doers and influencers in the African American community, joining the likes of President and Mrs. Obama, Jay-Z, and Tyler Perry. In February of 2013 he was named to NBC News/The Griot.com's 100 African Americans making history today, joining another impressive group including Kerry Washington, Mellody Hobson, and Kendrick Lamar. Kimbrough was named male HBCU President of the Year for 2014 by HBCU Digest.

Josie Ahlquist

After 12 years working on college campuses, Josie Ahlquist went rogue from traditional higher education roles—as an international independent speaker, author and consultant on digital leadership in higher education. She teaches teens, young adults, educational professionals and corporate executives how to humanize tech and prioritize building online community over traditional marketing methods.

Ahlquist has trained thousands across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates. She backs up her content with her own grant-funded and award-winning research. Her research agenda focuses on teens and young adults' digital experiences, senior executives' online leadership practices and digital leadership pedagogy. She maintains an active research agenda, currently undertaking three separate research projects with colleagues around the globe.

For the fourth year in a row, she has been named to the “Top 50 Must-Read Higher Education Technology Blogs” by Ed Tech Magazine. She is published as a co-author in the Handbook of Student Affairs Administration textbook, The Journal of Leadership Studies, co-editor and author in the New Directions in Student Services volume, “Engaging the Digital Generation,” as well as co-editor and author in New Directions in Student Leadership, “Going Digital in Student Leadership.” She is currently writing a book with Stylus Publishing, set to release summer 2018 on digital leadership in higher education.

Tim Cigelske

Tim Cigelske

Tim Cigelske is social media director at Marquette University and an adjunct professor teaching media writing and social media analytics and measurement in the Diederich College of Communication. Cigelske has managed Marquette’s social media for more than nine years, and he’s currently working on his masters thesis on the topic of Gen Z’s use of Snapchat. He is the author of Analytics to Action: A Guide to Social Media Measurement, and in addition to his focus on social media, he teaches an honors program seminar at Marquette called "The Art and Science of Creativity."

Liz Gross

Liz Gross is a data-driven researcher and scholar who specializes in creating entrepreneurial social media strategies in higher education. Her professional super power is to embolden colleges and universities and help them launch modern market research strategies using social listening. Teaching is her passion and she brings that to colleges and universities as the founder and CEO of Campus Sonar, a specialized social listening agency that matches high-value social media intelligence and engagement opportunities to organizational strategic initiatives.

Gross has more than 15 years' experience spanning the private and public sector including Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and University of Wisconsin-Waukesha. She received a doctorate in leadership for the advancement of learning and service in higher education at Cardinal Stritch University, a master's degree in educational policy and leadership from Marquette University, and a bachelor's degree in interpersonal communication from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Abby Meyer

Abby Meyer is the web content/social media specialist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She leads all social content creation, strategy and execution for UNMC's primary social platforms. She also serves as an on-campus consultant assisting colleges and departments to develop and maintain their own social media initiatives. She is a national presenter who has spoken on the power of paid social media content, efficient social management tools, community hashtags and how to effectively cover live events.

Meyer began her career in digital media at advertising agencies and a photo/video studio, working in video production and social media with national brands. She earned her master's degree in integrated media communications from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Marianna Barry Boyd
Associate Director of Communications and Social Media

Marianna Boyd is the associate director of communications and social media at Tulane University’s Office of Alumni Relations. In her role, she manages all alumni social media channels, and enjoys the balance of creating content and delving into analytics. She also works with the alumni relations team to develop comprehensive marketing plans for events and conferences produced by the Office of Alumni Relations.

Prior to delving into the higher-ed world, she worked at a full-service ad agency, managing video production, creating visual content and copy for social media channels, and developing digital strategies for clients. She graduated from NYU with a bachelor's degree in English and philosophy and went on to work in film and television in New York before transitioning to marketing.

Clarissa Chavez is a marketing strategist in the Division of Communications and Marketing at Augusta University and its affiliated health system. She has worked with the university and it’s health system cumulatively for three years, beginning as a marketing intern in 2014. Kalle Eko

Kalle Eko
Digital Communications Associate
MacArthur Foundation

Kalle Eko is the digital communications associate for the MacArthur Foundation, overseeing content and strategic planning for the foundation’s digital spaces. His primary role involves crafting digital strategies for the foundation, highlighting the work of MacArthur grantees through social media using multimedia and live video, and supporting the release of foundation news, including the recipients of the MacArthur Fellowship (also know as the "genius grants”).

Prior to his role at MacArthur, he worked as the senior online media specialist for City Colleges of Chicago (CCC), the third largest community college district in America. There, he crafted social media strategy and advised CCC staff and leadership on digital strategies. He has also served as the Online Media Fellow in the Congressional campaign of Tammy Duckworth and before that as the first Social Media Fellow in Chicago's Office of the Mayor under Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

He received his bachelor's degree in history from Princeton University and his master's degree in journalism from the Medill School of Northwestern University.

Karen Freberg

Karen Freberg

Karen Freberg is an associate professor in strategic communications at the University of Louisville.

She is an adjunct faculty member for the West Virginia University IMC Graduate Online program and has presented at several U.S. and international research conferences and at professional and trade conferences. She is a research consultant in social media and crisis communications and has worked with several organizations and agencies.

Freberg has coordinated and advised various companies on the areas of social media pedagogy and certification programs and launched a social media educators community on FB and Twitter (@SMprofessors) for professors, practitioners, and professionals in the education industry to share resources, brainstorm ideas, and collaborate on projects to bridge the gap between education and practice.

Along with her teaching, Freberg’s research has been published in several book chapters and in academic journals and she serves on the editorial board for several publications. 

In addition to academic publications, she has been interviewed for popular press publications such as USA Today, USA Today College, and Forbes. Freberg is also professionally active serving on the executive committee for the PRSA Entertainment and Sports section and is on the Technology Chapter Committee for the Commission for Public Relations Education (CPRE). She is also a regular contributor and a young professionals award judge for Front Office Sports.

Before coming to the University of Louisville, Freberg earned a doctorate in communication and information at the University of Tennessee, and a master's degree in strategic public relations at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California. She received her bachelor’s degree in public relations at the University of Florida.

Jesse Hartley

Jesse Hartley

Jesse Hartley is the director of alumni engagement for Tulane University’s Office of Alumni Relations. In this role, she is spearheading an alumni engagement initiative designed to excite and inspire alumni to engage with the university while sharing their enthusiasm with peers as well as prospective and current students. For this newly-formed initiative, she and a team of colleagues and alumni are creating an Alumni Engagement Score to gain a big picture view of university engagement, identify disengaged groups and invest resources into the right activities and opportunities for alumni.

Hartley began her career as a clinical therapist and brings her understanding of human behavior and psychology to higher education and alumni relations. No stranger to fund development and the nonprofit world, she served as state director of Children’s Advocacy Centers of Louisiana and as executive director of a local children’s advocacy center. She began her Tulane career as the director of the annual fund for the Freeman School of Business.

She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi and a master's degree in clinical psychology from Mississippi State University.
