Making Something Out of Nothing
Your editor has sent you out for a photo. You don’t know that much about your subject because the article hasn’t been finalized. You get there and there is nothing of any photographic value to shoot, or so it seems.Yikes! The pressure is on, the deadline is looming, and there’s no time to come back later. Your subject is on sabbatical for six months to Siberia and he’s leaving in thirty minutes. You have to get that photo! It’s now your job to make something from nothing. Frank Fortune, director of photography at Georgia Southern University, talks about these kinds of experiences (they happen a lot) and explores solutions to those assignments that don’t quite lend themselves to photography. Learn how, with a little patience and creativity, you will not only get a photo, you’ll get one for the portfolio!
3:00–4:15
Designing My University in Virtual Worlds
Your campus community now has access to intuitive 2D & 3D design tools, extensive social networks for support, and emerging virtual worlds to showcase their creations. Are you ready to partner with your network of virtual designers? Mathew Winkel provides an overview of selected virtual design tools: Second Life, Google Sketch Up, and Scratch. Examine the dynamic possibilities of various established design approaches including co-design, participatory design, and user-centered design. Finally, consider how social networks will facilitate and empower the production process.
4:30–5:45
Elective Sessions (choose one)
-
Photoshop Tricks (repeated on Tuesday at 1:30 PM)
What did we do before Photoshop? What did we do before we could clone, warp, spherize, and displace? Is there any one out there that knows everything about Photoshop? Absolutely not! Because Photoshop is so multilayered and has so many options, the creators of Photoshop don’t even know it all. Frank Fortune explores some tricks and techniques that are both simple and easy to use everyday. Learn some uses of channels, the amazing history palette, color correction techniques, and how to prep photos for pre-press. Even if you know it all, you might discover another way to git ’er done.
-
Designing with Your Campus Community
Many designers rely on their understanding of the user experience to craft intuitive, gratifying designs. The most successful efforts that engage users in the design process are often guided by the principles of co-design, participatory design, and user-centered design. This presentation examines how the user experience informs many design projects including print, Web, and even in emerging virtual worlds. Consider how online social networks may offer new ways to collaborate with your colleagues, clients, and consumers.
-
Mini-Makeovers for Publications (repeated on Tuesday at 1:30 PM)
Do your pubs need a few nips and tucks? Or do they demand an extreme makeover? Harness the expertise of the presenters and the brainpower of the group to reshape, rebuild, or refine your project. Bring your work to share with the group or just show up to contribute your great ideas.
