Universities advancing towards Excellence –
Fundraising and Development for European Rectors/Presidents

21-22 May 2008
Stockholm (Sweden)

The report on Philanthropy for European Research, officially launched in December by the European Commission, concluded with a set of recommendations that included the following points:

  • Aspiring to excellence in research requires fundraising from philanthropic sources to be included as part of a university’s overall strategy.
  • The fundraising practitioners or structures need to enjoy the full support and commitment of the university leadership.
  • The commitment of the university leadership to fundraising is critical to its success. It is recommended that fundraising skills are taken into account by search committees for Deans/Presidents/Vice-Chancellors/Rectors or used as criteria in elections for university leaders. Once in office, these leaders can take active steps to strengthen their understanding and skills in this area.

In the context of tighter public funding and a rapidly changing international environment, it is more critical than ever that your institution grows a strong base of philanthropic support. Diversifying sources of income not only enables your institution to be competitive in research, but also to attract outstanding students and outstanding faculty from around the globe.

Whether you are thinking of gearing up your development activities or have recently started, this conference will enable you to compare notes with international experts. Join us for 24 hours of exchange and discussion with some of Europe’s leading Rectors and Vice-Chancellors.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Eric Thomas, Vice-Chancellor, University of Bristol (UK), and author of the report Increasing Voluntary Giving to Higher Education for the British Government
  • Harriet Wallberg-Henriksson, Rector, Karolinska Institutet (Sweden)
  • Duncan Rice, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, University of Aberdeen (UK)
  • Jan-Håkan Hansson, Rector, Ersta Sköndal University College (Sweden)
  • Xavier Michel, Director, Ecole Polytechnique (France)
  • Mille Millnert, Rector, Linköping University (Sweden)
  • Jon Dellandrea, Pro Vice-Chancellor for External Affairs, University of Oxford (UK), and former Vice-President and Chief Advancement Officer, University of Toronto (Canada)

All speakers combine a history of highly effective institutional leadership with a compelling ability to analyse and talk about their considerable achievements in raising support for their institutions. They have done this in a range of different cultural contexts.

This is a comment received after the last event we organised for Head of Educational Institutions:

“It was the best piece of staff development I have had in seven years as a Head of Institution and well worth the money. It was engaging and thought-provoking - even potentially life-changing for me and my institution. It made me want to find ways of making it apply. Highly professional!”
