Positioning your Institution for Pre-eminence

How do we, as development professionals, ensure that our institutions set the right priorities – priorities that will have the greatest impact on our success? How do we ensure that our institutional leaders are invested in these priorities and will give their best to achieve them?
Two experienced academic leaders and development officers will lead this highly interactive workshop for senior educational fundraisers and those who oversee their work, drawing on the expertise of all participants to focus on:
- Institutional Strategy and Strategic Planning – who should be involved, how should the process be structured, what are the ingredients of a successful plan?
- Deriving Fundraising Goals from Strategic Objectives
- Metrics for Managers: measuring effectiveness of the resource development programme
Peyton Randolph Helm took office as President of Muhlenberg College in July 2003.
He has served as VP for college relations and professor of classical studies at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. He began his career in academic administration at the University of Pennsylvania as co-ordinator of College House Programs in 1981. He served as associate director of development and then director of development for Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences. In 1988, he was named VP for Development and Alumni Relations at Colby College, where he was promoted to VP for college relations in 2001.
He is a recipient of CASE Crystal Apple for Excellence in Teaching, given to advancement professionals who have been rated as a top speaker at ten or more conferences A former chair of the CASE Summer Institute in Educational Fundraising in Dartmouth, his writing has been published in CASE Currents and Successful Fund Raising, as well as various scholarly publications in the field of ancient history.
President Helm holds a bachelor from Yale University and earned his doctoral degree at the University of Pennsylvania.
Young Dawkins became Vice-Principal for Development at the University of Edinburgh in June, 2005. Prior to this appointment, Mr Dawkins served for eight years as President of the University of New Hampshire Foundation in Durham, New Hampshire.
Before joining the UNH Foundation, Dawkins served as Vice-President for Development, Alumni Affairs, and Communications at Oberlin College. Dawkins began his development career at Dartmouth College in 1983, where he worked for ten years as a major gift officer and director.
He is a 1997 recipient of the CASE Crystal Apple for Excellence in Teaching, a past member of CASE District 1 Board of Trustees, and an immediate past member of the CASE Philanthropy Commission.
