2014 Social Media Survey Results

CASE has partnered with Huron Education and mStoner to survey educational institutions about their social media activities. The overarching goal of the research is to create knowledge and resources for education professionals as they assess and implement social media strategies for communication and engagement.

Earlier this year, the partners conducted an online survey among a random sample of about 18,000 CASE members in the United States and abroad. Nearly 2,000 respondents from across all types of institutions responded to the survey. This is the fifth annual social media survey.

Here are some findings from this year's survey:

  • Facebook is the most used social media platform followed by Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.
  • Use of Instagram increased from 27 percent in the 2013 survey to 42 percent in 2014.
  • Institutions using social media as a fundraising tool grew from 41 percent in 2013 to 47 percent in 2014.
  • More than 80 percent say one of their goals for social media is to raise private funds.
  • Respondents say a lack of staff dedicated to social media is a barrier to greater success.

The detailed results of the survey were presented at the CASE Social Media and Community conference on March 19, 2014 in Marina del Rey, Calif.
