KEY SESSION
State of U.S. Higher Ed: Presidential Perspectives
An increasingly competitive global market has turned a spotlight on some of the challenges facing higher education in the United States. As the nation's colleges and universities continue to recover from the recession, the new reality has brought more intense focus to student retention and graduation rates, as well as access and affordability. President Obama is committed to ensuring that America will have the highest proportion of students graduating from college in the world by 2020. Three presidents will discuss how community colleges, private colleges and public universities may be able to work together to accomplish this increasingly difficult task. They will also reflect on the role of advancement offices and key external constituents in helping colleges and universities fulfill their missions at a time when the nation's attention has turned to them with hope for America's future.
Panelists: Eduardo Padrón, President, Miami-Dade College; Teresa Sullivan, President, University of Virginia; and Beverly Daniel Tatum, President, Spelman College
Moderator: Scott Jaschik, Editor and Co-Founder, Inside Higher Ed
10:30-11:45am CDT; 11:30-12:45pm EDT (75 minutes)
Benchmarking to Drive Advancement Strategies
Explore the annual fund trends revealed by the donorCentricsTM 2010 Index of Higher Education Fundraising Performance. Each year, Target Analytics compiles actual fundraising data from a broad sample of private and public schools to evaluate overall annual fund trends such as acquisition, retention, giving levels and much more. In addition to key annual fund metrics, presenters will share results of a unique longitudinal study tracking donor behavior both before and after making a $1,000 gift. The findings from these studies yield valuable insights that can help higher education fundraising directors improve both annual fund performance and their cultivation strategies for developing higher level donors.
Speakers: Jenny Cooke, Director of Higher Education, donorCentrics Benchmarking, Target Analytics, a Blackbaud Company; and Shaun Keister, Annual Giving Consultant, Campbell & Company

The Leadership Advantage: Managing Difficult Conversations
Conducting a critical performance review. Addressing tensions among colleagues on a team. Managing a particularly difficult employee. Making smart, efficient decisions, even when key stakeholders disagree.
We don't outgrow difficult conversations or get promoted past them. The best workplaces and most successful organizations have them, and handling them well is integral to success. Ineffectiveness comes at a high cost: conflicts consume energy, sap creativity, undermine teamwork and erode relationships. In contrast, effectively managing these conversations leads to improved productivity, healthier relationships and more efficient problem solving. Led by Douglas Stone of Harvard Law School and Triad Consulting Group, and based on years of research at the Harvard Negotiation Project, this presentation will provide a framework for understanding why some of our most important conversations are so hard. Stone presents a method for handling them with less anxiety and better results.
Speaker: Douglas Stone, Founder and Managing Partner, Triad Consulting
