Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day Produces Fundraising Success
A number of institutions that participated in the recent Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day met student fundraising goals while others took advantage of the increased interest to launch student campaigns.
On Feb. 28, more than 120 institutions worldwide participated in Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day, a celebration spotlighting the importance of private giving to education.
Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., met its goal to have half of its freshmen donate to a building campaign. Scott Chessare, assistant director of student programs and class campaigns, says this accomplishment secured a larger challenge gift for the construction of a new student center.
Other activities worldwide included:
- Montgomery County Community College Foundation in Blue Bell, Pa., recruited a student committee to spearhead the 2013 Student Challenge for need-based scholarships.
- At Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, students committed to participate in a fire walk over hot coals to raise funds for scholarship students who need money for living essentials.
- At the University College London, students and staff took "thank you" photos with the late Jeremy Bentham, a British philosopher and spiritual founder of UCL whose body is on public display on the campus.
- The University of Brighton invited students to thank donors by adding messages to a wall of thanks and filming short videos posted on social media.
- The University of Birmingham placed "tags" around campus advertising the impact of philanthropy.
CASE ASAP sponsored the Student Engagement and Philanthropy Day. For more information about student advancement programs, contact CASE's Robyn Neeley at asap@case.org or +1-202-478-5632.

Fundraising Study Tour for Senior Leaders Visits Top UK Institutions
CASE Europe is holding a fundraising study tour 5-7 June for rectors and presidents who are interested in learning how to maximize the potential from philanthropy for their institutions.
Participants of the tour will visit three UK institutions—the University of Oxford, the University of Reading and the University of Bristol—and have an "exclusive opportunity" to learn about their successful development operations, says Kate Hunter, executive director of CASE Europe.
"British higher education institutions value leaders who have an understanding of philanthropy and fundraising skills," says Hunter. "Tour participants will have unprecedented access to these leading UK institutions that have diverse traditions, structures and missions."
Speakers on the tour include Xavier Michel, former president of École Polytecnique, and Colin McCallum, executive director, university advancement, for the University of Salford.
Deadline Approaches for 2013 U.S. Professors of the Year

The deadline for nominations is April 15. Information on the awards program is available at the U.S. Professors of the Year program website. Send questions to professorsoftheyear@case.org.
