In 2006, charitable giving to higher education in the United States rose 9.4 percent over the previous year, reaching $28 billion, according to an annual CASE-sponsored survey by the Council for Aid to Education.
Prime Minister Tony Blair recently announced the implementation of a matching gifts program that would effectively double private donations to universities in England.
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has completed a 30-month appraisal of relationships between influential philanthropic foundations and educational institutions (K-12 and higher education).
Inside CASE
CASE officially launched operations in the Asia-Pacific region on Feb. 12 with the announcement of the appointment of Krista Slade to the newly created position of executive director of CASE Asia-Pacific, effective May 1.
Robert Reich, one of the nation's leading thinkers on business and the economy, will be a featured speaker at the CASE Summit for Advancement Leaders, scheduled for July 8-10, 2007, in Chicago.
April 20 is the deadline for nominations for this year’s U.S. Professors of the Year awards sponsored by CASE and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
CASE President John Lippincott has been elected to a one-year term as association representative on the board of directors for the American Council on Education.
U.S. Federal Relations News
Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Reps. Earl Pomeroy (D-N.D.) and Wally Herger (R-Calif.) have agreed to introduce the “Public Good IRA Rollover Act of 2007” in the House and Senate in the coming weeks.
The Tennessee attorney general required Fisk University to delay by 30 days its proposed sale of two important paintings the institution holds as part of the Stieglitz Collection (PDF).
Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) has introduced the Artist-Museum Partnership Act (S. 548), which would allow a fair market value deduction for charitable contributions of literary, musical, artistic, or scholarly compositions created by a donor and used by the recipient for exempt purposes.
The Tax Increase Prevention and Reconciliation Act (TIRPA, H.R. 4297), signed into law in May 2005, requires nonprofits to publicly disclose involvement in abusive tax shelter transactions and to pay a penalty up to 100 percent of any income resulting from such participation.
CASE District NewsDistrict I continues a lineup of breakfast programs in 2007.
District III is already making plans for its 2008 conference following the recent success of its 2007 conference, which had a record attendance of nearly 1,200. The theme of next year's conference will be "Take 5" and will be held Feb. 17-20, 2008, in Atlanta at the Hyatt Regency.
District IV holds its annual conference March 31-April 4 in Dallas, Texas.
District V recaps its December conference and gives regional updates in the spring issue of Advance, the district's newsletter. Archived issues are available.
Also, at its first meeting in 2007, the District V board approved the 2007-08 budget, which will enhance conference offerings and strengthen student involvement with ASAP 5. Investments are also being made in a mentoring program and in the creation of diversity scholarships for the district conference.
District VI plans to hold its 2008 conference, "The Great Adventure," Jan. 12-15, 2008, in Denver, Colo.
District VII will hold a CASE Major Gifts Roundtable from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 9, 2007, at Occidental College in Eagle Rock, Calif.
