On Dec. 31, the IRA charitable rollover expired after Congress adjourned for the year without passing an extension of the incentive. Unable to agree on a one-year alternative minimum tax patch/tax extenders package, lawmakers decided to drop the tax extenders, including the IRA charitable rollover.
On Dec. 20, the Internal Revenue Service released the final version of its redesigned Form 990, which nonprofit organizations will begin filing in 2009 (for the 2008 tax year).
The IRS plans to conduct a research/compliance initiative in 2008 aimed at examining colleges and universities and their activities.
With the 2008 presidential election season in high gear, the American Council on Education has updated its guidelines for colleges and universities regarding involvement with political campaigns.

District III is planning its 2008 conference featuring the theme "Take 5" in Atlanta at the Hyatt Regency, Feb. 17-20.

Districts VII and VIII co-hosted a community college symposium on Dec. 4-5 in conjunction with their joint district conference in Las Vegas, which drew 61 community college professionals. Future professional development activities in CASE District VII are being planned with the assistance of a newly formed community college council that will serve as an advisory body to the District VII Board of Directors.
