Description

Terry Sykora has over 20 years’ experience in higher education and has been involved with advancement initiatives at several universities. Although these initiatives were successful, Sykora found himself wondering “how much more could have been achieved with a better team effort and the organizations and systems to match?” In this book, Sykora shares his experience and his reflections on how advancement professionals can apply the principles of philanthropy not only to the goal of fund raising, but also within their own work places.

The central theme of this new book is that effective fund raising depends on an understanding of philanthropy. Philanthropists are motivated by a common goal: to help others. In higher education settings, these others are students and faculty and the people they turn to for help with their research and teaching. But Sykora points out that an understanding of philanthropy is equally important in the day-to-day office culture of advancement teams. By applying the principles of philanthropy internally, advancement teams will be more effective at achieving their external goals of enabling philanthropists to give to programs and institutions.

Both theory- and practice-oriented, this book is written for those professionals who are interested in building, leading, and managing outstanding advancement teams at institutions of higher education or nonprofit education organizations.

Testimonial

"I cannot count the number of times I have asked myself, 'Aren't there better ways of doing this work?' Terry Sykora... has made a valiant effort toward addressing this question. And I wish I had put more energy, over the years, into implementing many of his concepts." — Robert E. Nelson, Robert E. Nelson Associates, Inc.
