Chief advancement officers have been among the main drivers in the growth of the advancement industry during the past few decades. Relatively little is known, however, about this role and the people who fill it.
In Making the Case for Leadership, Jon Derek Croteau and Zachary A. Smith provide insightful details about 10 of the most successful CAOs in higher education: their career paths, leadership philosophies and leadership variables. The book also presents the authors' Advancement Leadership Competency Model, based on the results of the interviews with these 10 leaders and on rigorous data analysis.
The authors examine lessons learned and look at the implications, from their research, for the next generation of advancement leaders and future leadership development and training programs.
About the Authors
Jon Derek Croteau
Jon Derek Croteau is vice president and partner at Witt/Kieffer. A leading expert in human capital assessment and advancement leadership, Croteau is the former assistant vice president for campaign planning and operations and assistant vice president for advancement services/director of organizational development and human capital management for Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He is the author of The People First Approach: A Guide to Recruiting, Developing and Retaining the Right People and co-author of Making the Case for Leadership: Profiles of Chief Advancement Officers in Higher Education. He is adjunct professor in the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester. Croteau holds an Ed.D. from Boston University, a master's degree from Northwestern University, and a bachelor's from Emerson College.
Zachary A. Smith
Zachary A. Smith is the assistant vice chancellor of development for the University of California, Riverside. He is responsible for overseeing central development operations, including stewardship, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, scholarships and annual giving. He also manages program plans, budgeting, gift agreements and various talent management initiatives.
Smith has been published in the Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, the International Journal of Educational Advancement and CURRENTS. He has presented on talent management at national conferences and seminars, and his work has been highlighted in the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
