Description

Campus Crisis Management offers a comprehensive approach to planning for both preventing a crisis and responding when one happens.

The authors explain how to use a "crisis matrix" to assess any crisis, determine its impact on the institutional community and identify points to consider in responding to the crisis. Administrators will be able to draw on this matrix to develop plans and responses appropriate to a variety of situations.

The book also:

  • Examines the structure, operation and training of a crisis team,
  • Presents a comprehensive approach for developing a workable and flexible crisis management plan, from information gathering through distribution and maintenance of the plan,
  • Tells how to work with outside agencies, such as local officials as well as the FBI, FEMA, the Department of Homeland Security and the American Red Cross,
  • Explores strategies for working with the media and identifies target audiences and communication methods for various crises,
  • Discusses the need for "psychological first aid" following a crisis,
  • Addresses training and preparedness and provides sample training activities and
  • Presents cases studies of actual crises—environmental (hurricanes and tornados), facility (apartment balcony collapse, residence hall fire, power outage) and human (bonfire tragedy, plane crash, terrorism, shooting).

The appendix covers postcrisis debriefing and provides a checklist of questions to consider.

No other book offers such a thorough presentation of the practical issues surrounding campus crisis management. It will help your campus address crisis management in a coordinated fashion.
