Comprehensive Spending Review
In October 2010 Joanna Motion, vice president of international operations for CASE Europe, called on the chancellor to confirm whether the government's Matched-Funding Scheme for Voluntary Giving to Universities was going to continue: "Today's CSR and last week's Browne review will mean unprecedented challenges for universities' finances. With so much at stake, the chancellor must deliver clarity on whether this pioneering and effective scheme to stimulate philanthropy to universities will continue, so that institutions can continue to increase and build their fundraising capacity, generating more income for the sector. The scheme has already delivered a 12 percent increase in donor numbers and over £80m in cash income and has been key to developing a culture in the UK of giving to universities. We await further details on higher education spending with interest."
The Matched Funding Scheme for Voluntary Giving to Universities was introduced by the last government to encourage giving to universities. The scheme has been hugely successful, and is on target to raise £400m in its final year. The scheme has also been heralded for encouraging a culture of philanthropy in universities which haven't fundraised before.
