What if I forget to sign off the listserv before going on vacation? Does my “out-of-office” reply go to all the members of the listserv?

CASE filters out-of-office replies from showing up on the listserv. However, they are filtered based on the specific phrases:

  • out-of-the-office
  • out-of-office
  • out of the office
  • out of office
  • away from office

If your “out-of-office” reply does not include these phrases, the filter will not work.

I posted a question to the listserv and received an automated reply that said CASE must approve my message. Why?

Posts to CUE-L do not have to be approved before they are distributed to the listserv. Your post probably requires approval because it has one of the following phrases included in the text

  • out-of-the-office
  • out-of-office

• out of the office
• out of office
• away from office

I would like to receive a daily digest of listserv posts. How do I change my settings?

There are three versions for the digest—HTML, traditional and MIME format. Select one depending on your email client and preference. We find that most people prefer the HTML format.

(1) HTML format provides links to the posts and is easy to navigate. Your email must be set to receive HTML.

To set your digest to HTML format, send a message to listserv@list.case.org that says:
SET CUE-L HTML DIGEST

(2) Traditional format is text only and requires you to scroll through the email to read the posts, though it does include a list of topics at the top of the email.

To set your digest to traditional format, send a message to listserv@list.case.org that says:
SET CUE-L NOMIME DIGEST

(3) MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) format is a middle ground between text and HTML. It includes a table of contents with attachments to each post (in MIME format). Your email client must accept MIME to use this format.

To set your digest to HTML format, send a message to listserv@list.case.org that says:
SET CUE-L MIME DIGEST

I would like to receive individual emails rather than digest. How do I change my settings?

To resume regular mail delivery of each message when posted, send a message to listserv@list.case.org that says:

SET CUE-L MAIL

You will receive a digest containing messages to that point and then regular message delivery will resume.

I'm a writer or photographer who needs to change my contact information. How do I?

email the corrected information to tdavies@commschool.org.

How do I search the archives?

Since CUE has had several homes, its archives are in three places:

To search the archives at Lehigh:
This is a multi-step process using email commands sent to listproc@lehigh.edu. The commands go in the body of the email; you can leave the subject blank. Make sure your email is formatted as plain text.

To search for a word, send this command:
Search cue-l -all word

To search for a particular phrase, send this command:
Search cue-l -all

In case you're wondering, the -all means you are searching all the files that make up the archives. The pointy brackets tell listproc to look for a phrase.

The CUE archives at Lehigh are divided into files which are named chronologically, e.g. File 9904 is the fourth archive file from 1999. In response to the search command, you should receive an email with a list of file names (oldest ones first, so scroll down!) and a couple of sentences from each. If you want one of the files, say 9904, send this command:

Get cue-l/archives 9904

and listproc will email you the entire file, often in pieces. You then need to look for your keyword.

I tried posting a message to the listserv but it never showed up. Why?

Only listserv members can post to the list. Subscribe to the listserv by following these instructions.
Membership is determined by comparing the sender's email with the list's email roster.
Sometimes your email address may change without your knowledge. For example, an address may change from "yourname@server.yourschool.edu" to "yourname@yourschool.edu." CUE-L sees those as different email addresses. If that happens, send an email to Jen Doak at doak@case.org.

How can I get on (or off) the CUE Magazine Exchange?

The CUE Magazine Exchange is a mailing list; people on the list send magazines to other exchange members, and receive their magazines in return. The mailing list is housed online at Google Documents. To join the exchange list or learn how to edit your information on the list, go to http://docs.google.com. Log in with the user name cuemag (at)yahoo.com and password EditorsRock. Click on the "Instructions" file name in the list of files and read the document.

Are vendors and CASE educational partners allowed to participate in CUE-L? Can they market to the list?

CUE-L serves as a forum for advancement professionals to get and share ideas, assistance, feedback and guidance with colleagues around the world to enhance their work on behalf of their institutions.

While vendors and CASE educational partners which serve campuses are welcome to subscribe to this list and participate in the conversations, this list is NOT intended to serve as a business opportunity.

Most vendors and CASE educational partners respect the intent of the listservs, offer solid advice when they respond to questions, and do not promote their businesses. We welcome their participation and believe it's important for them to keep up with trends in the field.

Listserv participants who want to be contacted off-line about a potential business relationship should state this specifically in their messages. Otherwise, vendors and CASE educational partners should assume that individuals do not wish to be contacted.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email Jen Doak at doak@case.org.

Are my posts to the listserv private?

All posts to the listserv are publicly available to anyone with Internet access. They show up both in the archives and in searches through Web search engines such as Google, MSN and Yahoo.

CASE listserv etiquette
  • Use a meaningful subject line for your messages. This is a time-saving mechanism for readers.
  • Don't send messages to the listserv with no content, such as "I agree!" or “Me too!” These messages just increase the number of emails participants receive and are potentially annoying.
  • Before sending a message to a CASE listserv, make sure the question or answer is appropriate and is related to the purpose of the list.
  • Do not send copyrighted material. If you need to reference it, provide an excerpt or quote with attribution and include the URL to the content.
  • Avoid arguments with someone through the listserv. If you disagree with a post, consider sending an email to that person privately.
  • Many routine questions have been posed in the listserv's history, so don't hesitate to search the archives before sending a query to the list.
  • Be careful when hitting reply—your response will go to the whole list. Consider emailing the post's author directly to make comments that are private or not relevant to the topic.
