Day 2, Thursday, June 10

8:00-8:30 AM
Continental Breakfast

8:30-10:00
The Role of the Fundraising Professional
As frontline fundraisers, it is our responsibility to build relationships with people whose support is critical to our institutions. The way we do this work is both visible and important. However, everything we know about what motivates individuals to make large gifts tells us our most powerful role is as a facilitator. In this session Rebecca Tseng Smith goes beyond principles of relationship fundraising and describes the practice from a personal point of view.

10:15-11:45
CASE Simulcast ICONPartners in Philanthropy: Helping Your Institution Build Extraordinary Relationships
True partnerships result when we accept and respond to the full spectrum of what our donors have to offer. Hear some examples of how key partners have transformed the institutions Ron Schiller has led and how he worked with trustees, presidents and deans to prepare those institutions to work with extraordinary philanthropists.

11:45 AM-1:30 PM
Lunch on your own

1:30-3:00
CASE Simulcast ICONStructuring the Ultimate Gift
Explore which gift planning options are most effective in today's environment and why. Case studies based on actual six- and seven-figure gifts lead participants to a greater understanding of which plans may be most effective for a particular donor in light of their wealth, family obligations, the motivation for their gift, uncertainty about estate taxes and other factors.

3:15-4:15
Elective Sessions (choose one; repeated on Thursday)

  • Facilitating Ultimate Giving
This session will be an in-depth discussion of structuring the ultimate gift; taking theory to practice.
  • More on the Role of the Fundraising Professional
This session serves as a follow-up conversation to this morning's session.
  • CASE Simulcast ICONIntroduction to Flexible Endowments
Flexible endowments can help givers make major gifts years earlier than might otherwise be prudently possible. They offer an institution the same immediate benefits that any other endowment gift provides, while allowing the giver to defer turning over the principal. They are a particularly valuable method of giving for institutions in a fundraising campaign. Because they are not based on the tax codes, they are frequently overlooked by attorneys and accountants offering advice on gift planning.
  • Working with Philanthropic Partners
Discuss how to build on "partners in philanthropy."
  • More on Integrating Relationship-Based Fundraising
This session will be a dialogue, allowing the group to dive deeper into the nuts and bolts of integrating the critical focus on relationship building each day.

4:30-5:30
Discussion with the Faculty
Take this opportunity to talk with the faculty about ideas presented at the conference thus far and to share your own experience with relationship-based fundraising.

5:30
