Fundraising and Development Study Tour

May 7 - 11, 2012

Toronto, Canada

"The CASE study tour of Canada raised my sights, clarified my thinking and has helped shape and inform Loughborough's progress ever since. The tour represented time and money very well spent."

Shirley Pearce, vice-chancellor, Loughborough University

The Canadian experience of fundraising represents an especially useful model for Australian and European universities, given the shared history of public funding and the relatively short time scale over which Canadian universities have invested in development programmes.

The study tour will focus on four leading institutions all delivering successful, high-impact advancement programmes:

  • University of Guelph
  • University of Toronto
  • Wilfrid Laurier University

Key elements of the Canadian Study Tour:
  • Briefing and introduction in Toronto
  • Access to key players and decision makers including: university presidents, deans, key volunteers and heads of advancement and their staff
  • Discussion with distinguished advancement professionals including:
    • Joanna Motion, partner, More Partnership
    • Lorna Somers, vice president, McMaster University Foundation, and director of development, McMaster University
    • Max Blouw, president and vice-chancellor, Wilfird Laurier University
    • Joanne Shoveller, vice president, advancement, University of Guelph
  • Follow-up debrief in London for European participants
