Magazines 101
Designed for editors who are looking for a comprehensive overview on alumni and university magazines, this fast-paced and highly visual workshop will explore the essentials of magazine planning, writing and editing, design and production. You'll see lots of samples of magazines that are doing it right-and wrong, learn where to find inspiration and leave with solid tips on how to make strategic tweaks that will take your magazine to new heights.

Writer's Mind: The Eightfold Path to Story
What distinguishes great writers from pedestrian technicians is not mastery of craft but mastery of thought. Yet those of us who teach writing often fall back on teaching craft because it's easier, it's safer and we can readily observe results. More important is the teaching of writer's mind-how to think like a storyteller. This workshop will focus on how fine writers think, from first thoughts about a story idea to last revision of the manuscript. We will take actual university magazine projects and discuss how, as writers and editors, to take subjects and out of them create stories that take hold of your readers and do not let go.

New Trends in Magazines and Publications
Do you and your magazine have the vision-and the guts-to look for smart solutions outside higher education? Whether it's design trends from the fashion world, infographic treatments from business magazines, or smart concepts from admissions publications, great ideas are everywhere. This session spotlights award-winning work from CASE institutions, trends in the outside world, and before-and-after versions of magazines. Presented by a campus insider who's now an outside consultant, this workshop considers the future of alumni magazines-and editors-in an era of cutbacks.
