New to social media? Don't know a tweet from a text? This optional preconference workshop will get you up to speed on the latest tools. Conference faculty will guide you though many of the popular social media Web sites, their uses, terminology and practical applications. This workshop will give you the fundamentals and fully prepare you for the full conference sessions.

Social Media: How Did We Get Here?
What is social media and where did it come from? What technological and sociological changes took place to give rise to this phenomenon? This session will look at the differences between Web 1.0 and 2.0, the proliferation of social networking sites and tools, what we learned from mybarackobama.com and how we can apply these lessons to the work we do in alumni and development. Topics will include: Web 1.0 vs. 2.0; rise of social networking sites; terminology; sociological changes stemming from social media; and why social media is important to the work we do in advancement.

Social Media Tools
This session offers an overview of six social networking tools:

  • Twitter: An introduction to the microblogging service; examples of how individuals and institutions use it.
  • Facebook: How do I begin using this tool in a responsible fashion for work (and for personal use at the same time)? Includes etiquette/suggestions for professional use.
  • LinkedIn (who to connect with, when to connect, what to post): How to use LinkedIn to connect with people you know, and perhaps more importantly, those you should know.
  • Flickr (photo sets, tagging, organization structure/controlled vocabulary): Why should you consider using a social photography management site for your school?
  • YouTube (channels, commenting): The immediacy of online video keeps alumni connected to what is happening on campus, regardless of where they live.
  • Blogs (tips, linking): An introduction to blogs; examples of institutional blogs; examples of personal blogs.

Setting Up Your Accounts
Faculty will guide attendees through setup and implementation of user accounts on the services described above, and will highlight the nuances of some of the services (privacy options, etc).
