  • Gift or Grant? A Taxing Issue Resolved, Part I
A timeworn topic on the CFRnet listserv and at the CASE Conference on Corporate and Foundation Relations is the "gift vs. grant" question. Why all the confusion? Because sponsored program offices use the same words as CFR, but with different meanings. Grantmakers and academics overlay definitions of their own. Even the CASE Reporting Standards & Management Guidelines confuse the issue. No wonder the discussion never ends! One question matters in determining if an award is a gift: Is it charitable under federal tax law? Budget restrictions, schedules, reporting and deliverables are irrelevant. The IRS rules are the gold standard. Fortunately, they are the simplest to understand. This session panel includes both CFR and sponsored project office perspectives, and covers the issue from the standpoint of public, private, major-research and moderate-research institutions.
Speakers: Dennis Alexander, Director of Foundation Relations, Texas Christian University; and Patricia Gregory, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Executive Director, Medical Corporate and Foundation Relations, Washington University in St. Louis
  • Managing Corporate Relationships in Higher Education
What motivates corporations to engage in higher education? Are there any expectations or ROI? What ethical issues arise? This session shares case study results of how small, medium and Fortune 500 corporations engage with higher education. Cone's (2010) corporate citizenship spectrum-including philanthropy, cause-related branding, operational culture and a DNA citizenship ethos, provide the framework for managing corporate relationships across all areas of interest for a university.
Speaker: Morgan Clevenger, Assistant Professor, Wilkes University
  • Measuring What Matters: Best Practices for CFR Metrics
A moderated panel discussion will present differing perspectives, policies and best practices with respect to measuring CFR success. The moderator will present the data demonstrating that we often do not measure what is most important in determining success. Panelists will share what metrics they have been using at their respective universities and how effective they believe those metrics to be. They will also make suggestions as to how metrics can be refined and redefined in order to reflect what matters most with respect to securing and growing corporate and foundation dollars, as well as focusing their CFR staff's job descriptions and time management. Panelists will address questions such as, are we measuring what matters most? What tools are most effective for measuring performance? How do metrics influence CFR job descriptions and strategic planning? How do we integrate financial and non-financial measures? How do we utilize both quantitative and qualitative measures? How do we utilize both individual and team metrics to foster greater collaboration and overall success? What data exists demonstrating the effectiveness of particular methods or metrics? What data, research still needs to be done? Following panelists' presentations, the moderator will invite a discussion and recommendations with respect to metrics best practices, policies and research.
Speakers: Kenna Barrett, Consultant, Kenna Barrett Consulting; Sarah Fodor, Director, Office of Foundation Relations, Northwestern University; Joanna Glickler, Associate Director of Foundation & Corporate Relations, University of Washington; Glenn Kellum, Senior Associate Vice President, Foundation & Corporate Relations, Emory University; and Anthony Nicotera, Director, Foundation Relations, Rutgers University

  • Gift or Grant? A Taxing Issue Revisited, Part II
A follow-up to "Gift or Grant? A Taxing Issue Resolved," which addresses the gift/grant issue from the CFR and sponsored programs office perspectives, and in terms of commercial exchange and federal tax law. This session hones in on external funding that appears to redefine commercial exchange, defy tax law, and cross the gift/grant divide. Suppose a private foundation asks for a share of royalties from intellectual property as a condition of a grant? Is the grant still a charitable contribution to your institution? This session examines a potentially emerging trend in CFR giving-foundations that request a share of royalty income that they will use for charitable purposes. The session includes perspectives from foundation staff and legal expertise on nonprofit law and tax-exempt organizations.
Speakers: Dennis Alexander, Director of Foundation Relations, Texas Christian University; and Patricia Gregory, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Executive Director, Medical Corporate and Foundation Relations, Washington University in St. Louis

  • Challenges of Collaboration Among Diverse Institutions
Foundations increasingly encourage collaboration. While they have good reasons, collaboration requires a new approach on the part of CFR offices, whose matchmaking responsibilities now extend beyond their own campuses. These include helping negotiate what needs and issues are most suitable for collaboration, and the logistical challenges of designing and implementing work plans. Particular issues may arise in building partnerships between small colleges and large research universities, or in situations of geographic distance. A panel of four CFR professionals who have stepped up to these challenges will give brief descriptions of their collaborations and discuss what works and what doesn't. The remainder of the session will be devoted to questions and answers and general brainstorming. Bring your challenges to add to the discussion. Participants will leave with some ideas and approaches for reaching out to potential collaborators and managing expectations, internally and between partner institutions.

  • A Partnership for Social and Economic Progress in Africa
What does it take to work with an organization like the MasterCard Foundation, which is putting millions of dollars toward building a collaborative global network of educational institutions to address education in developing nations, with a focus on Africa? In this session, we bring together representatives from U.S. university partners of the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program. We will explore some of the challenges faced by Michigan State, Berkeley and Stanford as they move through the first phases of the program and create a roadmap to sustainability and success. One question on everyone's mind is how the global network of universities and MasterCard Scholars will unfold as the program develops.

  • Foundation Trends
Join the Foundation Center's director of research, Steven Lawrence, for a detailed exploration of how foundation funding for higher education has been evolving in recent years and new opportunities for support. This program will address questions including:
    • What are the current priorities of foundations that fund higher education?
    • How have the higher education giving interests of foundations evolved in recent years?
    • How did the economic downturn impact foundation giving for higher education and has funding fully recovered?
    • What are the prospects for growth in foundation support for higher education in coming years?

  • Increasing the Participation and Persistence of Underrepresented Students in STEM Fields of Study
Government officials and educators at all levels understand the importance of opening participation in STEM fields of study and STEM-related professions to reflect more fully the diverse mosaic of American society. However, relatively few non-governmental organizations address this goal by partnering with institutions of higher education around the country. During this session, leaders from Howard Hughes Medical Institute and The Posse Foundation will discuss the rationale behind their organizations' decisions to focus on this pressing national issue and will outline the distinctive strategies they have adopted in pursuit of that goal. They also will share related partnership opportunities open to institutions of higher education. The format will comprise brief presentations by each speaker, followed by a moderated discussion and ample time for questions from attendees.
