This seminar is part two of a three-part series on advancement staffing.
Sergio Gonzalez, who made a career transition into advancement from government, will share his personal experience including his initial trepidations for a career in the field and what he did to prepare himself for working in a higher education environment. A discussion will follow about why they hire non-traditional candidates at the University of Miami and the inherent dynamics and challenges of taking this path, which involve such decisions as to how to fit the new hire into the campus.

Sergio M. Gonzalez
Senior Vice President for University Advancement and External Affairs
University of Miami
Sergio Gonzalez, senior vice president for university advancement and external affairs, was appointed in December 2001. He led a successful $1.4 billion campaign for the University of Miami. He is responsible for the implementation of all fundraising and alumni affairs for the university. Previously, he served as chief of staff for Miami-Dade County Executive Mayor Alex Penelas. He served as the director of Miami-Dade County Mayor's Office of Job Creation and Welfare-To-Work and was the executive director of South Florida 1999 Super Bowl Host Committee. Gonzalez was the initial executive director of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust.
He received his bachelor's degree in foreign service from Georgetown University and his Juris Doctorate from Columbia University. He currently serves on the CASE Board of Trustees.
