With the chief advancement officer position becoming increasingly important to the success of the institutions they serve, the higher education advancement industry has experienced tremendous growth and increased sophistication over the last few decades.
Jon Derek Croteau and Zachary A. Smith, the authors of a new book, Making the Case for Leadership: Profiles of Chief Advancement Officers in Higher Education, will discuss emerging themes from their interviews with ten of the most successful advancement leaders in the industry. In addition, they will outline practical applications for developing current and future chief advancement officers.
Jon Derek Croteau

Jon Derek Croteau's experience in higher education and nonprofit organizations encompasses human capital assessment, leadership and management. Based in Rochester, N.Y., he is a senior consultant with Witt/Kieffer's education, academic medicine and not-for-profit practices. He has conducted numerous executive searches and human capital assessments for universities, colleges, healthcare organizations, foundations and other nnprofit groups.
Prior to joining Witt/Kieffer Croteau served as assistant vice president for campaign planning and operations and assistant vice president for advancement services/director of organizational development and human capital management for Carnegie Mellon University.
He publishes and presents regularly on talent management topics. He is the author of The People First Approach: A Guide for Recruiting, Developing and Retaining the Right People and Making the Case for Leadership: Profiles of Chief Advancement Officers in Higher Education. He is on the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Educational Advancement, and is adjunct professor at the Warner School of Education at the University of Rochester.
Croteau has served on the Emerson College Alumni Association Executive Board of Directors, and the Board of Ambassadors for the Home for Little Wanderers and was a mentor for Point Foundation.

Zachary Smith
Assistant Vice Chancellor, Development
University of California Riverside
Zachary Smith currently serves as the assistant vice chancellor of development for the University of California, Riverside. He is responsible for overseeing central development operations, including stewardship, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, scholarships and annual giving. He also manages program plans, budgeting, gift agreements and talent management initiatives, such as strategic recruitment and recognition programs.
Previously, he served as the senior director of strategic talent management and initiatives for university advancement, and director of development for the School of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine. He was responsible for building UC Irvine's internal executive recruitment program, as well as strengthening its training and retention initiatives. UC Irvine's talent management program contributed to an increase in quality of staff, decline in turnover, lower vacancy rates, and a substantial decrease in time to fill positions. As a result, the program was recognized at both district and national levels through CASE, winning two silver medals and one gold.
Smith has authored numerous publications on leadership and talent management, including the new book, with co-author Jon Derek Croteau, Making the Case for Leadership: Profiles of Chief Advancement Officers in Higher Education. He also wrote a feature article for the March 2008 edition of CURRENTS magazine titled, "Branching Out: Recruiting the right people to educational fundraising makes all the difference."
